Dead Man's Switch

An update

Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 1:03 p.m.

Hello all,

It has been a few months since the last update. The new codebase is mostly finished, all tests have been written and pass and all the target functionality has been added. The only thing left to do is write and test the user account creation code and make sure everything works as required.

Hopefully this will be done in the near future, so for those of you who mailed us and expressed their concern, you shouldn’t worry, everything is on track as planned.

Thanks!

New features

Well, that took a while. We are glad to see that you are all still alive (except the ones who are dead). After a small lull in activity, we are sure you will all be overjoyed to learn that I have been working on new features and a new codebase. Among other features, the new codebase will allow you to specify how often you want the system to check up on you and send the emails, so you can have the emails sent after as little as one day.

The only thing that might delay the launching of the new features somewhat is the fact that this service is not like others. We really do not want any problems to arise, so we will spend a lot of time testing to see that the new code works correctly until we are satisfied that it is ready to bring to you.

We hope you will like these new improvements. As always, for any suggestion or feedback, please email us at support@deadmansswitch.net.

Clarification

After a few mentions in the media and thankfully no casualties yet, some people have asked when their emails get sent. We’re currently working on a feature that will allow you to specify custom intervals per email so you can specify some emails to be sent more quickly than others (e.g. if you go on vacation without internet access and can’t pay your bills so you want to notify a friend for it), but for now, this is the schedule:

30 days after your last visit to the site, an email gets sent to you urging you to log back in to verify you are okay. A second email gets sent two weeks after that, and the third email is a week after that. If you haven’t logged in in the following week (for a total of sixty estranged days), your emails get sent and we cry a single bitter tear for this tragic loss.

As always, if there are any questions/comments/concerns, you can contact us at support@deadmansswitch.net.

Beta Started

Well, the site is finally open for beta testing. If you want to try it out you can register, but since we’re still testing it, make sure you don’t enter any really sensitive data. We’re pretty sure everything’s fine, but we wouldn’t want to risk sending all your emails saying how much you hate everyone.

The site supports OpenID, so if you have an account you can just log right in. If there are any problems or questions, you can reach us at support@deadmansswitch.net.

Have fun and stay safe,

Dead Man’s Switch staff.
